Summary / Abstract:
With the threat of Eskom losing about a quarter of its power supply by 2030 due to aging power plants and the perpetual increment in energy demand, South Africa seems destined for intermittent power shortages. The demand for photovoltaic (PV) power capacity will grow exponentially and with it the ever increasing demand for a reliable fault detection algorithm/technique in PV arrays. Faults in PV systems can have adverse effects on PV array energy yield, efficiency, security and reliability if they go undetected. Therefore, to ensure that PV systems perform optimally, it is imperative to adopt fault detection and diagnosis techniques that will be able to detect when faults occur in PV arrays and diagnose the problem. It is critical that the method employed be able to localize the PV fault so as to effect corrective measures. This paper, focuses on the development of an artificially intelligent PV array monitoring system that will be able to detect, diagnose, and localize a PV fault.
