1. 2 New Materials and Concepts for Cells and Modules
Summary / Abstract:
The crystalline Si solar cells are the most widely used for renewable source of electricity, have some challenges of efficiency loss and reliability problems such as browning damage on ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA)-glass encapsulation. As an alternative, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) was used for encapsulation of Silicon (Si) solar cells and it has advantages of possibility of surface modification into micro-lens or anti-reflection effect. We mimicked leaf epidermis structures to improving light capture and hydrophobicity of the module surface with silane and ozone treatment technique. By modifying the surface of PDMS, we proposed quasi-Fermi level control using periodic local focusing of incident light. Using surface treatment with PDMS encapsulation for Si solar cells, we could control the transmission, light haze and the wetting angle. It makes solar cells improve efficiency under vertical illumination and omni-directional illumination compared to the bare cell.
