Summary / Abstract: By the end of 2019, hydropower accounted for as much as 47% of the 2,537 GW of global renewable power in operation, with an installed capacity of 1,190 GW. However, solar photovoltaics (PV) and wind energy together represented 90% of the newly installed annual capacity. Solar power continued to lead the yearly expansion, for the fourth year in a row, with an annual increase of +20% while hydropower capacity increased by +1%. Solar PV broke for the third consecutive year the 100 GWp threshold of global annual installations, to reach a cumulative operational capacity estimated at 627 GWp. As prices continue to fall, and with even stronger commitments from governments and private sector to implement clean, environmentally friendly and renewable energy, solar PV will undoubtedly continue to experience significant popularity in the years to come.
