The French Commission for Atomic and Alternative Energies (CEA) has been investigating a lightweight honeycomb core composite structure for micro-concentrators for space applications. This new design requires a double stage honeycomb sandwich, a front layer to support the optical system with a glass front sheet and a second honeycomb to provide stiffness and mechanical strength to the module. Mechanical studies were conducted to design a lightweight structure suitable for the space environment, meeting the requirements for stiffness, adhesion between the components and mechanical strength.
