Summary / Abstract: Soiling rates of framed and frameless modules varies due to their design differences. To examine the soiling rate, successive outdoor tests have been conducted on extensively soiled module strings before and after cleaning. The power output of these framed and frameless module strings in horizontal or tilted positions were measured using a portable I-V tester. The horizontal irradiance has also been measured simultaneously using a reference cell. After normalizing the power measurements with respect to incident irradiance and rated module power, the loss in power due to soiling was found to be in average 11% higher for framed modules than for frameless modules. This can be explained by a longer dust and dried slurry deposition, extending from the module edge towards the first string of cells in framed modules. This comparative performance loss of framed modules due to soiling is less pronounced for tilted modules.
