Summary / Abstract: The purpose of this study is to assess the decrease of inter-string mismatch loss (IS-MML) resulting from the reduction of the number of strings connected to an inverter’s Maximum Power Point Tracker (MPPT). Two complementary methods are considered: a numerical approach and an empirical approach. The numerical approach allows the relative evaluation of the decrease in IS-MML for specific environmental parameters (irradiation, temperature) and its evolution over time with different PV module degradation rates. The empirical approach is carried out using in-situ measurements from five sites presenting three different terrain types (2 lakes, 1 desert, 2 mountains). This approach reveals how the reduction of the IS-MML in large operating PV plants varies with different environmental conditions, as well as the qualitative state of the PV system.
