Besides climate protection, sustainable development needs increasing endeavors regarding biodiversity and nature protection as well as climate and sustainability adaptation in agriculture and concepts for integrated and multifunctional land use, addressing increasing land use competitions. To address these challenges simultaneously, we present the Agri4Power concept as a new “nature-conserving agrivoltaics” concept. It is characterized by a combination of agricultural land use (including energy plants) with sustainable electricity production through bifacial vertical photovoltaic (PV) module systems and nature and species conservation through flower strips. The concept is in line with agricultural production, may stabilize income for farmers and has the potential to contribute to the further expansion of photovoltaics at higher electricity market values. The Agri4Power concept presents socially supported opportunities to make an important contribution to energy sector transition and to improve biodiversity protection and ecosystem services in agricultural areas. Due to its considerable potentials in various applications, the Agri4Power concept may open up new land resources for renewable energy expansion.
