Summary / Abstract:
With the here presented analytical data from root cause analysis projects from 26 affected power plants, our first goal is to share our general experience and practical hints on how to handle a case of possible backsheet degradation. Specifically, we lay out typical consequences of backsheet degradation to demonstrate practical relevance of the issue. Furthermore, we introduce reliable, preferably low-tech methods to identify degraded modules and a mitigation procedure. Concerning the latter aspect, an identification of the affected modules is a crucial part, because often not all modules of a given power plant (even from the same module type) contain the same backsheet materials. This allows a failure analysis of the degraded backsheets that can provide a basis for an evaluation of the different types of defects in each backsheet layer.
