Summary / Abstract: Partial shading causes a disproportionate reduction in the power output of c-Si photovoltaic modules due to the high breakdown voltage of their solar cells. In this work we analyse the relevance of the reverse characteristics of solar cells in the energy yield of partially shaded photovoltaic modules. The reverse I-V curves of commercially available cells are characterised, and the energy yield of photovoltaic modules is simulated using an experimentally validated simulation framework. Results indicate that cells with low breakdown voltages can significantly boost the specific energy yield.
