Summary / Abstract: A large market for photovoltaics (PV) should be located in desert regions due to high irradiance, but the major limitation for high PV production in desert is the soiling of PV panels due to dust and sand, which can reduce the power output of a PV system by up to 28% in only 7 days, requiring frequent cleaning of the surface of the PV modules. Globally soiling reduces the current solar power production by at least 3%–4%, with at least 3–5 billion $ annual revenue losses. Today solutions for cleaning are expensive and need to be adapted in type and in frequency for each PV project and can consume diesel, rare purified water, costly equipment and manpower.
